Works on YouTube and Netflix

Everything you need to learn while watching

Turn the subtitles you already watch into an active language lesson, without leaving the player.

Subtitle blur

Subtitles stay blurred by default so you can test your listening first. Hover a line to reveal it when you need help.

Click to translate

Click a word for its translation and dictionary entry, Ctrl/Cmd+click to add more words, or click-and-drag to select a whole phrase.

Pronunciation

The selected word or phrase is pronounced automatically in the subtitle language, with a speaker button to replay it.

Auto-pause on hover

Hovering a subtitle pauses the video so you have time to read, and pausing reveals every blurred line at once.

Replay the last line

Press the Left Arrow key to jump back to the previous subtitle and hear it again, instead of the player's default rewind.

Your languages, your rules

Pick the subtitle (source) language or auto-detect it, choose your translation language, and toggle Sublens per platform on Netflix and YouTube independently.

How it works

Three steps, no setup.

2

Play any title with subtitles on. On YouTube, turn captions on with the CC button.

3

Click any word

Hover to reveal a line, then click a word for its translation, definition and pronunciation.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you might want to know before installing.

Is Sublens free?

Yes. Sublens is completely free, with no account, no sign-in and no ads.

Does it work with auto-generated captions?

Yes. On YouTube both manual and auto-generated captions are supported on youtube.com/watch pages, as long as captions are turned on with the CC button. On Netflix it uses the title's subtitle track.

Which languages does it support?

The subtitle (source) language is auto-detected from the active caption track, or you can set it manually. Translations and dictionary definitions can be shown in any of the supported target languages, picked in the settings popup.

Is my data private?

Yes. Sublens collects no personal data and has no tracking or analytics. Only the word or phrase you actively click is sent to Google Translate to return its translation and pronunciation. See the Privacy Policy for details.
